ROSEMEAD - Three incumbents and one challenger will face off in November for three seats on the Garvey Unified School District Board of Education.

Local parent Antonio Ramos is challenging board members Bob Bruesch, Irene Flores and John Yuen, whose terms are set to expire.

The top three vote-getters on Nov. 3 will land board seats for 4-year terms.

Ramos said he doesn't have a problem with how the current board is running the district, but he said he can do better.

The 37-year-old computer systems analyst recently graduated from Cal State Los Angeles with a degree in computer information systems.

Ramos said he could put his educational background to use by helping to improve technology at Garvey schools.

The incumbents welcome the challenge.

"When you have a challenger, you have improvement, you have to keep on your toes," said Yuen, an electronic engineer who has been on the board for eight years. "But he should know, it is a hard job to do."

Yuen called the current board "a good team."

Bruesch - a former teacher of Ramos' - taught in the district for 38 years and has been a board member for six years. Flores has been on the board for 10 years.

District Superintendent Virginia Peterson offered some advice for voters - pick candidates who are good at prioritizing during a fiscal crisis.

"Similar to most school districts, the major issue we are facing is our financial situation," in light of state budget cuts, Peterson said.

The district has already had to cut teachers, increase class sizes and reduce funding for various programs.

"We are taking the cuts one step at a time. We are trying to get some grants," Flores said.

The district represents 12 elementary and intermediate schools serving approximately 6,000 students in portions of Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead, and unincorporated Los Angeles.
